Improving the Hatbox Ghost

Ah, there you are...

Welcome back foolish mortals. Last time, I spoke my feelings on the new "Hitchhiking ghosts" at Walt Disney World. We have also been given a better look at the new "Tombstones" in the graveyard since then. I think I will make my next post a prediction post about what I see these new additions doing. But here's what's in store today. I have come up with an idea to give the Hatbox Ghost a little more animation. I may have never gotten a chance to see him myself, but I can't help thinking I would have been pretty confused about his "Floating" top-hat if I had.

And that is what I have figured out how to fix.

As seen in this diagram, we have two projector surfaces (represented in light blue). One on the AA, attached to a retractable rod from within the body; and one within the hat-box. The projectors themselves are labeled via green dots. The AA's surface is projected from the front by an external (hidden) projector, and the hat-box is surface is projected from an internal projector. The effect goes as follows:

Stage 1: We have the AA's projection (On the body's head) visible, with the face being projected onto the surface. When the sound of Constance's Axe plays, we switch to stage 2.

Stage 2: The AA's projection extinguishes. The Projection surface quickly retracts via the rod into the neck-line and out of sight. The Hat falls onto the empty neck line, seeing as the head has just vanished, it has nothing to rest on. Hats don't just float in mid air you know. It falls onto the seemingly decapitated body's neck-stump. The face is then projected into the hat-box via the second projector from within. The Hat then floats back up, and the process will reset itself.

And of course, we all know it's not going to be just an image of the pop-eyed head that will be projected when he does return. It will be more of a video projection like Constance. The two will be fighting for the rider's attention at the end of the attic. A little more "Animation" will be in order. He's probably going to talk too.

What do you think? Leave a comment bellow, and please remember to follow the blog.

I'll see you all a little later...

The "ReHaunting" Continues...

Ah, there you are...

It was reported to me last night (Tuesday, February 22nd) that the Hitchhiking Ghosts at Walt Disney World's Haunted Mansion have been, well...put into refurbishment. Of course, the main point here is that the ride is still operation.

Let's go back a few years. In spring of 2006, the 50th Anniversary of Disneyland prompted a number of changes to the Anaheim Mansion. Rumoured additions included the now present "Floating Leota", the updated attic with the "Black Widow Bride". Other rumoured enhancements included the addition of the five "husbands" of the new bride in the seance circle in some form or another, the return of the great "Hatbox Ghost" and "Interactive Hitchhiking Ghosts". They have yet to materialize, nor does it appear that they will at any time in the near future...at least in Anaheim...

(Yes, they have cleared out the coroner in the attic for Ol'Hattie, but with the constant talk of his role in the 2012 film, it is likely that they will wait until later to reintroduce him if they ever do.)

So in 2007, Walt Disney World's Haunted Mansion received what I have heard was a much needed refurbishment. Of course, this refurbishment would go on to be known as the "ReHaunting" due to the massive amount of enhancements and new additions that ended up materializing. Now, we know what made it into the Mansion by the reopening in September 2007:
  • The Updated Disneyland Attic Scene
  • The New Grand Staircase Scene
  • Enhanced 3-Dimensional Audio Effects Throughout the Attraction
  • New & Enhanced Lighting Effects
  • The New Bat-Eyed Wallpaper Scene
  • Disneyland - Style Portrait Gallery Scene
  • Floating Madame Leota

A great number of minor changes where implemented as well, but the major additions are what is important in the context of this post. A number of other enhancements to the attraction that were rumoured to be in the works (or documented an accounted for) but never actually materialized. These included:

  • Again, the return of the Hatbox Ghost
  • Having the Gargoyles narrate the entire Stretching Room scene
  • Exterior projections of some sort
  • "Interactive Hitchhiking Ghosts"

Of course, some thing take time to materialize. A number of things have materialized, or are beginning to as of this post, that were not present when the mansion re-opened in 2007. These include:

  • Additional Safety "Elements" at the exit, a 'Pointing Green Hand'
  • A New "Interactive" Exterior Burial Ground

If this post would have been typed up a day ago, the list above would be as you see it. However, Yesterday evening, I was informed (as I previously stated) that changes have already begun to take place once again at the mansion. The infamous Hitchhiking Ghosts of the Haunted Mansion are being updated in some way, shape, or form. The amazing thing is, once again, Disney has found a way to "enhance" a major piece of the attraction and keep the ride operational.

I would assume that anyone reading this knows the basics about the Hitchhiking Ghosts. But for anyone who doesn't; here is what I will explain for you myself: They are three robot ghost characters that are followed by an effect that showcases the rider in a "Doombuggy" with one of the three of them via 3 large mirrors. If you really need more detail, go here to learn about them.

So recently, the AA's and the stick-puppets have been taken from view. They have been covered with black sheets. On these sheets, a computer generated animation of Gus, Ezra, and Phineas are shown. Since the mirrors have been covered up, the ghosts glide across the black sheet instead of hopping into your car. The animation is pretty neat, you cam view it here, with more information and a report. Thus, it seems the "Interactive" Hitchhikers are on their way. These animations are more then likely, "Place holders". They are not the finished product. The are there to keep the scene interesting while it gets a major overhaul. I have no clue exactly what we will get once it is finished, but here is what I have heard is "being tested":

  • An On-Ride Photo Opp. That will take the picture of you and the Ghost in the car so you can buy it for $15.00 or so at a gift shop.
  • Body-Mapping Technology like the Nintendo Wii and XBox360 Cash in that will be used to allow the ghost to "Interact" with you...

So, here is how I look at it: I think we will see more advanced AA's with Projected faces similar to Buzz Lightyear in the Attraction at Tommorrowland, or Constance to some degree. Much more movement then the old 1960's AA's could provide. I don't think we are going to have the ghostly-go-round anymore. I assume the mirrors will be projections to some degree, of course, with your refection in it. With digital mirrors of some sort. They don't need any sort of flash to take your picture. But I don't really know. I can only guess at the moment. Until then...

...I'll see you all a little later...

Enhancements Ideas - Part 1

Ah, there you are...

Let us get right down to business. I have been think about a few thing that could be added to the mansion that would be less destructive then the current "additions" have been. For ever gravestone unearthed, and every cherished performance re-dubbed, there is an idea that could have been implemented that, few if any, mansion fans could see any negative consequences in.

I myself like the new graveyard vocalists; I think they show character that furthers their existence. For instance, let's take the Duke and Duchess. During the 2007 refurbishment at Walt Disney World, the two ghosts received new vocal performances. They have been met with mixed feelings by Mansion fans. Some hate them, others love them. I have to say, they are nearly identical to the original Betty Wand and Bill Lee performances, with one exception;

The addition of the line "Scream! Oh Sugar" (Or Sugar, some say it is, Until the source tracks are presented to me, I'm saying the former) replaces Betty Wand's "Oh that's my day" or something line. I still to this day, after listening to them countless times, have yet to figure out what she mumbles at the end of the song. The new line is much easier to hear, to understand, and it fits. It's as though she has spilled the wine at the end of the song, and then so, says "Oh Sugar". But this is getting a bit off topic. The fact is, the new vocals are not accepted by some of the fans. It's because the original performances where a memorable part of the scene. They had character, and even with some improvement, they can't stand to see them leave even one of the three mansions that they are used at.

But, on-topic; one performance that is less them memorable to most: The Ballroom Guests. A generic restaurant atmosphere recording of tinkering china plates, cups, and muffled chatter. The scene is amazing as a whole, but take a simple element and isolate it out, and you find something that could be improved on. I wonder what the origins of the recording are. Could it be some generic sound library track that WED pulled out for use in the mansion? Or did they record it specifically for the mansion? Maybe a banquet at "Pickwick Center" near the studio was recorded for the mansion? Anyhow, the fact is, the sound effects used in the ballroom could use an update that would enhance the scene for the better. Here's what I have in mind:

Look at the cast of characters we have in the ballroom scene. What would they talk about around that table?

You know that old Walt Disney quote about Pirates of the Carribean? The one where "It's like a cocktail party; the guests can listen in on each conversation"? Well, the ballroom is indeed a party. What do you think those conversations would consist of?

The idea of adding a few otherworldly minutes of conversation to the scene would add so much (more) life to it. I have always like the Swingtips cover of Grim, Grinning Ghosts. The musical interlude takes listeners on a quick tour through the mansion's rooms; in the ballroom, we get the following dialouge:

"Might I have this dance?" - (Obviously the Dancers)

"(Giggles) I'm a' gettin' down (Laughter)" - (Dancers again)

"...And the guy who said to me, "You can't go up there without a safety-harness", I showed him!" (I'd assume the chandelier characters, but it could be any of the ghosts)

"...How dare you look at me!" (Duelist 1)

"...And we shall duel to the death!" (Duelist 2)

"...Sure, the wicked rises..." (Could be any of the ghosts)

The ghost talking about how they died, or having a conversation could really add some life to the scene. After replaying through the first part of 2003's Haunted Mansion game for Gamecube, the idea got expanded apoun. A great number of ghosts from the ride appear in various rooms, and they can talk to you. The Emperor from the ballroom says something like this:

"...What? What do you mean I'm in danger? I think you underestimate the loyalty of my subjects! How could I possibly be in any sort of danger?"

Thus, we get the idea he was assassinated. The grandmother character from the ballroom says something like this:

"Why aren't you wearing the sweater I knit you deary?"

The idea of giving the characters real voices instead of just one atmospheric sound would give the scene so much life. I know I have said that at least a hundred times in this post, but it would. The characters themselfs wouldn't need to be synced with the audio; they already seem to just make noise without moving their mouths, though nobody can understand it at all. With the new pin-point audio system technology, they could have tracks that would direct to the materialization spot for each of the ghosts.

If anyone would really miss the generic sounds of today, I'd be surprised. They have nothing that screams "Ghost Sounds" in them. You could probably record a more lively track in your local McDonald's then the one used in the ride. I'd love to hear what you all think of this idea.

I'll see you all a little later...

What if? Ultimate Audio Collection CD Set...

Ah, there you are...

I've set my self up for quite a task foolish mortals. In the last post, I raised the question of "what would the track listing for the ultimate Mansion audio collection look like?" The idea of the Disney Company officially releasing such a set of audio is something a mansion-fan can only dream of. The odds of it ever happening are as low as low can get, but it's just a "What if?" How much audio is there? Some of it most likely doesn't even exist anymore. There are multiple documented "Lost" files of audio that have slipped into the cracks of time and space. But that's no matter in a "What if?" So, let's start this list moving...
